Lost Theories
Any of you Lostaways out there read Michael Crichton's book Prey? It is a thriller about nanotechnology, and the "villain" of the story is a dust cloud, a swarm of microscopic machines, which can disrupt machinery, invade and infect living things, and even work in a coordinated fashion to perform the tasks and take the lifelike form of larger objects or beings, including humans with which it has come in contact. Like, say, an abducted black kid that talks backwards, perhaps. Or a dead father who's missing from his casket. Or a lethal jungle creature. Or if it wants, just a black cloud of dust.

Scientists control these micro-machines, but eventually (and inevitably) they begin to evolve and adapt and take on a life of their own. They attack humans and eat their flesh, and they learn to reproduce. As Malcolm would say, "Uhh, life finds a way."
The book wasn't that great, but it got me thinking...you have:
A mysterious black dust cloud
Strange appearances by people who couldn't possibly appear
Experiments on the island
Quarantined hatches
People getting sick
All boats or planes in sight crashing into the island
This certainly wouldn't come close to explaining everything happening on the island. I still believe there are spiritual and/or psychological forces at play. Too many weird coincidences for there not to be. But as far as the island's "monster" is concerned, I'm going with nanotechnology.

i think that's the prevailing theory so far. i read on another forum that the creator said something about everything on the island having some basis in science... and people were saying it was some form of nanotechnology.
please please kill off michael next week!!!
Damn, and I thought I was being original. I'm just going to assume that everyone copied me.
No, please kill off another hot chick!!!
why you gotta upstage gina's post?
and stop telling me what happens
Can we cease the Michael-bashing? He's not superhuman, but he's a genuine dude. And who's gonna raise Walt?
I forgot about Prey! The book wasn't good, but the basic storyline had potential. I like your theory. Did you also see those human forms and scenes that were buzzing in the black cloud when the camera panned behind it?
One thing that bothered me last night was why the heck would you burn a plane in the middle of the forest? They could've set the whole thing on fire! Maybe that wouldn't be a bad idea because then nothing could hide behind the foliage...
I like Michael... they should get rid of Charlie.
I concur. Charlie is a wuss. He's got the Australian hottie on board and he still wants to tote around Our Lady of Brown Sugar? That and his decking of Sayid last season make this hobbit expendable - especially before he goes Gollum on us all.
Michael's a good guy at heart - how many fathers would be so forgiving?
You're all wrong.
It's actually all the dream of an autistic kid who fell asleep on the plane. And he's holding a snow-globe of a tropical island.

Anyone else notice that the thing (whatever it is) shows up when someone's in a tree? What's with that?
