Facebook... Finally

I finally caved and joined Facebook. I've never been into the social networking scene before. I couldn't tell you what MySpace and Friendster look like, and I never bothered with Orkut, even though it came out while I was at Google. But after seeing Facebook profiles open on every other laptop monitor in Torts class, I had to see what the phenomenon was all about.

Since I already have a website for blogging and posting photos, this basically seems like a place to see how many friends I have. And when I say friends, I also mean acquaintances who are looking to inflate their numbers (egos?) by adding everyone with whom they've ever had a cup of coffee. I don't know, maybe it's not just an ego thing, and building a huge network actually serves a purpose, but I don't see it yet.

Nonetheless, it has some fun features, and I suppose the main purpose is to network, so I'll continue to play around with it and see where it takes me. Who knows, maybe I'll discover some long-lost friends. So far it's just the same people I interact with on a regular basis anyway.

At least I'm now among the million strong for Stephen Colbert.

What, no Linked In? Although that's really more about the network than about the "social" part.

I think the egotistical part is where people actually think that I'm going to sign up for *another* service just to be able to read what they write. Publish a real blog with an RSS feed, dammit. 'Course, that could be why I don't have any "friends".

But if it were me in class the only application that would be open all the time is Google Reader :).

I'm with ya. Google Reader is way better, since it consolidates everything. Why do I feel like we're fighting a losing battle?

it's less of a network thing i think and more of a 'see what stupid shit your friends are up to' and easy way to see people's posted pics and to chat with others and drop comments w/out having to engage in a full chat session.

see if you can add josh childress... hubert is friends with maddog apparently

oh yeah change your 'blog' link up top so that it's clickable even when you're on a blog entry. this has been bugging me for a while!!!

Okay, made it a live link. The logo at the top center is also a live link. Ah, the things I do for love.

I think the point is that an RSS reader and blog accomplish pretty much the same thing. The gadgetry of Facebook is unique, but otherwise it's no easier to set up than a blog with a link to a Picasa or Flickr album.

Yeah, and we all used to say the same goddamn things about blogs, yet look where we all are now.

I, on the other hand, have friends on mySpace AND Facebook. Two more accounts I gotta deal with.

F'ing internet, man....

Facebook actually feels comprehensive - like everyone is there or will be there. Friendster never got there, nor did Orkut, and certainly not MySpace. Facebook's privacy controls are excellent. I do think this will set the mold for networking sites the way Google does for search.

The privacy settings are key. Not being able to keep my profile hidden from non-friends would have been a deal-breaker.
