Blu-ray... Finally
Given my penchant for collecting movies (217 DVDs and counting), it took me a surprisingly long time to get a blu-ray player. I finally made the upgrade this week when I bought a new laptop with one built in.
Now it's time to start working on my blu-ray collection. Planet Earth is an obvious starting point. But two questions: 1) do I upgrade any of my existing collection, and 2) should all my new movies be in blu-ray?
Some choices are easy. The only blu-ray LOTR trilogy is the theatrical version. I'm not downgrading story just to upgrade technology. And THE trilogy is not in blu-ray in any form. Of course, for that one, I would prefer the theatrical versions.
Some choices are a little more difficult. Is Lost: Season 5 in blu-ray worth $11 more than the DVD set? What about $15 to upgrade Terminator or T2? $50 to upgrade to the Godfather trilogy blu-ray restoration set? How about my favorite movies that are less action-oriented, like A Few Good Men, Usual Suspects, or Shawshank?
Perhaps a test run on the big screen will convince me one way or the other. Planet Earth is on its way!

also, if the dvd upconverion on your blu-ray player is good enough you won't feel the need to upgrade. DVDs looks really nice after being upconverted by my panasonic BD player that was free with my TV
I just got a big screen HDTV on Amazon and it came with a free Blu-Ray player. My (very loose) general rule is that if it is a movie with actions / explosions / efx, and came out recent enough that it is filmed with a HD source, then I'll get it on BD. Picked up the Watchmen on BD when it came out.
Of if I find something really cheap @ Fry's or Amazon, I may pick it up even if I already have it. Surprisingly BBY has BD on sale sometimes too. I picked up The Avatior & Flight of the Phoenix at BBY for $13 each friday.
Of course, exceptions are made for awesomeness such as the Band of Brothers on BD. Waiting for a sale to get the Bourne trilogy on BD too.
man, so tempted to get the PS3 Slim now, but why does the price cut have to happen when school starts? :|
Yeah, I saw that. Just get it. School is easy for you. :)
